Speculation returns in the media of the looming exit of Leo Beenhakker as coach of the national football team.
Sixty one year old Franciszek Smuda, currently coach of Lech Poznan, has declared to the Fakt tabloid: “If the contract with Beenhakker is broken and someone from the Polish FA (PZPN) asks me to replace him, then I would accept the offer.” Leo Beenhakker (67) has been making it plain for some time that he is not happy in his present post and his relationship with PZPN is poor. Last month reports emerged that if Beenhakker does not secure a good result in the World Cup qualifying match against Northern Ireland at the end of the month then the new president of the PZPN, Grzegorz Lato, will sack the Dutchman.
Dire goal
However, Jan De Zeeuw, who assists Beenhakker says: “Leo’s plans have not changed. His most important goal is qualification to the World Cup in South Africa next year.. There is no possibility of him breaking his contract. If we win the next two games then we will almost certainly be in the finals. So why should he resign?” Poland play Northern Ireland on March 28 and San Marino on April 1, Fool’s Day.
