BYDGOSZCZ, Poland. May 04 (PS) — Will a club from the 1. Liga be representing Poland in the UEFA Europa League next season?
That depends. If underdogs Pogon Szczecin manage to defeat Ekstraklasa outfit Jagiellonia Bialystok in the REMES Polski Puchar final, that will very well happen.
The winner of the final will represent Poland at the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds.
However, what does the 1. Liga side want more - the REMES Puchar Polski or promotion to the Ekstraklasa?
"What I would prefer - the Polish Cup and or promotion to the Ekstraklasa? The Ekstraklasa of course, " said coach Piotr Mandrysz after his team advanced to the finals of the Polish Cup.
"Needless to say, we will try our best effort to win the cup. If we do it, we will be representing Poland in Europe from the 1. Liga," adds Mandrysz.
In the first semi-final match in Chorzow his side ended in a sensational 1-1 draw, mainly due to because Pogon's goalkeeper Radoslaw Janukiewicz defended fantastically, while in the end Maciej Mysiak equalized.
Pogon for the first time in 28 years, will play in the final of the Polish Cup. They previously lost in Kalisz to Lech Poznan 0:1 in the eighties.
The finals will be played May 22 in Bydgoszcz. The winner will play in the UEFA Europa League.
Results of the semi-finals:
Pogon Szczecin - Ruch Chorzow 0:0; first match 1:1
Jagiellonia Białystok - Lechia Gdańsk 1:1 (0:0); first match 2:1
