WARSAW, Poland. Nov 4 — The Polish national team may likely take part in the 40th FAT King’s Cup 2010 in Thailand, in which they will play against not only the home team, but also Denmark and Sweden.
"Our team’s participation in the cup is not yet confirmed," says Agnieszka Olejkowska, the spokesperson of the Polish Football Association (PZPN).
Negotiations with the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) are open, which is also confirmed by PZPN’s marketing agency, Sportfive.
Moreover, because the cup is taking place in January, Poland boss Franciszek Smuda, can only call-up players from the Polish Ekstraklasa, which is going to have the winter break then.
Poland will not be the only team sending a weaker squad, as World Cup qualified Denmark will also be sending a second team while there is doubt that Sweden - who was originally planned to participate - will attend in the cup at all. The Swedes are currently said to be replaced by North Korea.
"We are still waiting for Franciszek Smuda’s decision. As far as we know, Sweden cannot play in the cup, so they will be replaced with North Korea, which also takes part in the World Cup 2010. In addition, Denmark might send their second team," believes a Sportfive employee.
Poland will be playing friendly matches for the next three years in the run up to UEFA EURO 2012 hosted by Poland and Ukraine.
