WARSAW, Poland. Nov 15 — Franciszek Smuda's debut did not end in victory, but neither did Pawel Janas' or Leo Beenhakker's debuts. Nevertheless, the Polish coach is confident that better results lie ahead and is happy with what he saw with the exception of a poor pitch at Legion stadium.

The Poles were defeated 0:1 (0:0) by Romania in Warsaw on Saturday. It is the first match following the appointment of Franciszek Smuda as national team coach after the sacking of Leo Beenhakker, who failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa.

"Despite the defeat, I do not despair. I am patient. I know what to do and I trust we’ll achieve good results." said Smuda post game.

"All the players showed much commitment and this is most important. I am convinced that they will demonstrate better football in a game against Canada on Wednesday."

Polish international captain Michal Zewlakow admitted that even though his side fell on Saturday, there were some positive aspects to the team’s performance.

"No coach can work wonders in a couple of days and every sober-minded fan knows full well that with so many personnel changes in recent months one has to wait a bit longer for a new style to emerge and for better results to come," he said.

Poland take on Canada next on Wednesday. The match will kickoff at 17:00 local time (11:00 ET) in the northern Polish city of Bydgoszcz.
