GRODZISK WIELKOPOLSKI, Poland. Sept 2 (PS) — Sebastian Boenisch on Saturday will have his first chance to play on the Polish national team, which will close the door to play in a team vice-world Germany.
The Werder Bremen player admitted that the German national team was his priority, but the determination of Franciszek Smuda was what persuaded him not to wait longer at the invitation of Joachim Loew.
"The decision was hard for me, because for many I years played in the German youth national side. We won the UEFA European championship in 2009. I have been very close with that team," admits Boenisch.
"The key effort which proved me not to wait any longer was the coach - Coach Smuda who wanted me very much in his squad. He called five or six times a week. He decided, for a player it is important that they are aware that the coach wants him and will put faith in me." adds the German former youth international.
The Werder Bremen player's attitude to delay his Polish international debut irritated some fans and journalists. It has been suggested that since he chose Poland as a back-up plan he should not have the privilege and honor to play.
However, at this moment it does not look like the desperate Smuda is so keen on letting go any possible improvements to his fragile unexperienced Polish defense.
