ATHENS, Greece. Nov 12 (PSN) — Since Manuel Jimenez took over AEK Athens FC, Roger Guerreiro has had no problem finding a place on the starting line up at the Greek team and become a major player in it's recent success.
The former Polish representative recently scored some important assists and media in Greece are speculating to as why Guerreiro remains ignored in Poland.
"Roger has returned back to great form," says Jimenez, who is a personal fan of Roger.
Before the coming of Jimenez, Roger could not count on a place even in the match squad of the Greek team. Now he is a regular starter and a key player responsible for AEK's great run this season. Why the change?
"Roger simply used his chance. Earlier, I heard a lot about him, I saw him play on the Polish national team matches. He's a great player technically, and has a very well laid left leg. Most importantly, he can play as a team player," says Jimenez.
The former Sevilla FC coach has also begun to question Poland coach Franciszek Smuda's decision to ignore the on form Brazilian-Pole.
"I do not want to be involved and insult the competence of your coach, but it does not seem normal. The kind of form that Roger presents himself in now he should definitely have a good chance to return to the Polish national team."
Roger was last called up for Poland in November 2009 for Poland's friendly matches for Romania and Canada, which were debut matches for Smuda as coach. The tricky attacking midfielder saw a few minutes against Romania coming off the bench but could not help Poland dodge a 1:0 defeat. Roger was later unused in the match with Canada and has since been left off the kadra.
It was later learned that Smuda did not see eye-to-eye with him for not being a "true Pole" and ignored him throughout the entire training camp.
Interestingly, before Manuel Jimenez took the job at Athens he was interested in a coaching role at Wisla Krakow, but the club from the Wawel was not interested in his services.
"Serious discussions did not occur, but in the future I would like to try to work in your country. In view of the UEFA Euro 2012, Poland have a great future." says the Spaniard.
