Beenhakker: Smolarek has lost himself in fantasy

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands. Nov 30 — Former Poland boss Leo Beenhakker is struggling to understand like all Polish football fans why former Racing de Santander striker Ebi Smolarek is still without work.

"I would have never thought about bringing the reduced Ebi to Feyenoord. We do not need a player like him, because we already have some with very similar characteristics, from which are all better than him." says Leo Beenhakker, the former Polish national team coach who is currently the Director of Football at Feyenoord Rotterdam.

During his reign as Poland selekcjoner Beenhakker often counted on Smolarek as his match winner, even if the player was without form due to being relegated as a bench warmer in both Spain and England. Ebi was one of the Dutch coaches favorites. It was during Beenhakker's stint with Poland that Smolarek helped qualify Poland for the UEFA EURO 2008 and was named second highest scorer during qualification.

Unfortunately, for more than a hundred days the player has been without a professional football contract.

"Why of course, I am surprised that no one wants." Beenhakker told Sport.

"Maybe Smolarek does not know that clubs are no longer as rich and do not pay such money they once did? I don't know."

"He may not want to realize it, but there are plenty of players of his skill that do not have a contract either around the world." wonders Beenhakker.

Smolarek's last round in professional football was last played in May 2008. In August, his contract with Racing Santander was terminated after he was deemed too weak for the club, and has since remained unemployed.

Reportedly the player's financial expectations are a big factor in putting off potential employers. It's such demands that did not allow him to sign a contract with Bulgarian CSKA Sofia, or neither with Cypriot Anorthosis Famagusta. Since the Pole's entry into the world of unemployment no top tier club has shown interest in Smolarek, with only smaller clubs putting their offers on the table.

Smolarek is currently being monitored by MLS outfit Chicago Fire as the club's newest potential Polish player, however, there is strong doubt that even the American club will be able to satisfy the Pole's financial needs.

"I can not understand his behavior. Smolarek knows how to play football, but is it possible he has lost the distance between reality and fantasy?" continues Beenhakker.

Will Ebi ever play professional again? That is a question not even Leo Beenhakker can answer, but Ebi himself.

More rubbish from our old racist coach. Shouldn't be napping rather than giving interviews.
